Experts from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have completed an International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) of Kazakhstan. The assessment was conducted from September 21 to 25.

As part of the IASA, U.S. experts reviewed Kazakhstan’s state aviation safety oversight system, aviation legislation and regulatory framework. They also assessed their compliance with ICAO standards and recommended practices.

On September 24, the FAA team visited Air Astana in Astana and conducted an assessment of the airline. Air Astana is currently an applicant for the economic authority from the U.S. Department of Transportation required to operate flights to the United States.

On September 25, the preliminary findings of the assessment were presented. The FAA experts noted the substantial work carried out by Kazakhstan’s aviation authorities and highlighted positive results in several areas.

The FAA will next send Kazakhstan’s aviation authorities an official notification of the assessment results. This will be followed by consultations on corrective measures to address the issues identified during the assessment.

After these procedures are completed, the FAA will make a decision on granting Kazakhstan Category 1 status. Obtaining this status will provide the regulatory basis required for Kazakh air carriers to complete the necessary procedures to launch direct air services between Kazakhstan and the United States.
