From September 21 to 25, Kazakhstan will undergo an International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) conducted by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The assessment is part of preparations to open direct air services between Kazakhstan and the United States.

FAA experts will assess Kazakhstan’s state safety oversight system and its compliance with ICAO standards.

The assessment will cover aviation legislation, aircraft airworthiness, licensing of aviation personnel, and flight operations oversight.

On September 24, the FAA expert team will visit Air Astana, which has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authorization to conduct commercial operations. The visit is not an inspection of the airline and is intended to verify information provided by the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has been working with the FAA for two years to prepare for the IASA assessment. In August 2024, a preliminary technical review under the IASA program was conducted in Kazakhstan.

Following the assessment, the FAA will hold a final briefing and subsequently provide a written report. The results will be an important step in further work toward establishing direct air services between Kazakhstan and the United States.
