Construction of Central Asia’s First Dedicated Aircraft De-icing Facility Nears Completion at Almaty Airport

Construction of Central Asia’s first dedicated aircraft de-icing facility at Almaty International Airport is nearing completion, the airport’s press service announced.

Once commissioned, the new facility will significantly improve the efficiency of winter operations, optimize ground handling processes, and strengthen the airport’s ability to ensure safe and reliable operations under adverse weather conditions.

During the winter season, every aircraft departing from the airport undergoes mandatory de-icing treatment. Until now, these procedures have been carried out on the existing apron. The new dedicated facility will relocate de-icing operations to a specially equipped area, reducing apron congestion, minimizing pavement wear, and improving the overall efficiency of ground handling services.

One of the project’s key features is the ability to perform de-icing while aircraft engines remain running. This is expected to significantly shorten processing time and improve flight punctuality. In addition, the facility’s location close to the runway system will reduce taxiing time after de-icing, maximize the effective holdover time of de-icing fluids before takeoff, and further enhance operational safety.

The new facility covers a total area of 92,000 square meters, including 48,000 square meters of concrete pavement and 44,000 square meters of asphalt pavement. Of the total area, 37,000 square meters are allocated to connecting taxiways, while 6,400 square meters are designated for specialized airfield service vehicles.

More than 500 specialists and 269 pieces of equipment are currently involved in the construction, allowing the project to enter its final stage.

After commissioning, the facility will be capable of simultaneously servicing up to eight Code C aircraft or four wide-body Code E aircraft. This will increase the airport’s winter operational capacity, reduce flight delays, and accelerate aircraft turnaround times.

The project also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. A modern collection and recycling system for used de-icing fluids has been incorporated into the facility to prevent contamination of soil and minimize environmental impact.

According to the airport, the first dedicated aircraft de-icing facility in Central Asia marks another major milestone in the long-term modernization of Almaty International Airport. The project reflects the airport’s commitment to implementing international best practices, developing modern aviation infrastructure, improving operational efficiency and safety, and promoting environmental sustainability.
